Gout & Cereal, Cheerios, Grits & Other Breakfast Foods

Breakfast foods are an important start to the day for gout sufferers. But hidden ingredients in processed foods, especially iron supplements, can ruin your gout diet. It is usually best to stick to natural products like oatmeal and homemade muesli, or avoid traditional breakfast foods, and prepare your own fruit-rich meals. If you’d like to see what packaged breakfast cereals and similar foods have to offer, I’ve included a selection in the chart below. It is vital to read the labels, as nutrients vary widely between manufacturers, and recipes may change.

Beware Excess Iron

When you check nutrition labels, also look for iron. Many cereals are fortified with iron. This might be good for kids. But it can be dangerous for adults. Especially males, and premenopausal females. Excess iron is a common problem and is a major cause of gout. See my Gout and Iron article for more information.

Gout & Cereal Acid-Alkaline Tables Update Notice

The information in this table is extracted from old acid-alkaline tables. I have moved the table to a new food project, as their relevance to gout is limited without a full diet analysis. The food diary is not yet operational, but I am moving nutritional information there pending feedback about what features you want to use. Once the project is complete, I will update all nutrition tables here to make them more relevant, and easy to use.

Your Gout & Cereal

You should avoid nutrition tables until you have agreed on a gout management plan with your doctor. Which can incorporate your diet plan. So for complete advice on how to choose the right foods for your gout read the Gout Diet section.
